About

The Kaskaskia, Ridge Lake, and Sam Parr Biological Stations are vital research facilities operated by the Illinois Natural History Survey, which is part of the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Our work focuses on advancing science in fisheries ecology and management while supporting conservation efforts across Illinois and beyond.

Each station offers distinct research environments — from the expansive waters of Lake Shelbyville, to the controlled ponds of Sam Parr, to the historic research lake at Ridge Lake inside Fox Ridge State Park. Together, they form a cornerstone for ecological research, education, and public engagement.

Our Mission

At the core of our work is a three-part mission:

  1. Advance Scientific Research: We conduct field and laboratory investigations that explore fundamental and applied questions in fisheries ecology, aquatic habitat management, and invasive species control.
  2. Train the Next Generation: Through hands-on research experience and mentorship, we prepare undergraduate and graduate scholars for careers in fisheries science and aquatic ecology.
  3. Engage the Public: We build connections between science and the community through outreach programs, fishing creels, internships, and collaborative alliances with agencies and conservation organizations.

Our Research Approach

Our research connects fundamental ecology to real-world applications. Ongoing projects investigate:

  • Predator-prey dynamics
  • Trophic interactions within aquatic ecosystems
  • The behavioral ecology of fishes
  • Impacts of invasive species on native ecosystems
  • Habitat enhancement strategies for lakes and reservoirs
  • Long-term impacts of climate change on water bodies

We combine rigorous field sampling with experimental studies in controlled environments, using sophisticated facilities such as wet labs, mesocosm systems, and a variety of fisheries sampling equipment.

Partnerships

Collaboration is a critical part of our success. We partner with:

  • County, state, and federal agencies
  • Non-profit conservation groups
  • Local fishing communities
  • Academic researchers from universities across the country

These partnerships increase the impact of our work and refine conservation practices across aquatic ecosystems.

Field Stations

  • Kaskaskia Biological Station: Located on Lake Shelbyville near Sullivan, Illinois, Kaskaskia serves as our hub for large reservoir and river studies, with extensive wet lab facilities and direct lake access.
  • Ridge Lake Biological Station: Located in Fox Ridge State Park, Ridge Lake is home to one of the world’s longest-running public fishing creels, which delivers essential data on sportfish populations and angler success.
  • Sam Parr Biological Station: Adjacent to Stephen A. Forbes State Park near Kinmundy, Illinois, Sam Parr features an array of experimental ponds and wet labs ideal for controlled aquatic research.

Serving together, we are committed to protecting and understanding aquatic life today and for future generations.
